T¶¶Ňőapp’s Union department will host its first-ever Esports Day Camps from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 7 and Oct. 9 in the R.C. Cook University Union on the Hattiesburg campus. Designed for students ages 11–14 or in grades fifth through eighth, the camps will introduce participants to the excitement of competitive gaming while developing skills, building camaraderie and learning from experienced esports coaches.
Featuring engaging instruction in popular titles such as Minecraft and Roblox, participants will have the opportunity to improve their gameplay through hands-on experience, learn advanced strategies, and emphasize teamwork, sportsmanship and positive gaming habits.
“We're so excited to launch these camps and continue building connections all across our community,” said Trace Rutman, Esports program director. “We are so privileged to have such an incredible space for our collegiate teams, and we can't wait to share it with our campers. We've designed a program that will give campers an experience they've never had before. Using our gaming computers, playing under the lights and being on stage is something they will never forget.”
While Rutman focused on the camp’s immersive gaming experience, Becca Benson, associate director for Operations and Programs, emphasized the personal growth opportunities it offers participants.
“This camp is designed to be more than just fun,” said Benson. “It's a chance for middle schoolers to build confidence, connect with others, and explore their creativity in a unique and supportive environment. Held in the same state-of-the-art facility used by our collegiate teams, the experience offers something truly special. Whether they're exploring top-tier gaming setups, collaborating in team-based challenges, or feeling the rush of competing in a live arena setting, every moment is crafted to be memorable, meaningful and exciting.”
Registration is $99 per participant—which includes lunch and a camp T-shirt—and may be completed . Early registration is recommended as space is limited. An early bird rate of $89 is available through Tuesday, Sept. 23.
This initiative is part of the university Union’s broader effort to provide cutting-edge programs that combine education, recreation and technology. Based on a STEM.org-accredited curriculum created by the Esports & Online Gaming Association, the camps will also include discussions on the latest trends in esports, potential career pathways, fun university experiences, prizes, and the importance of strategic thinking and teamwork.
