Frequently Asked Questions

General questions

Most scholarships will stack with all other aid, up to cost of attendance. However, the State of Mississippi governing board, IHL, does not allow students to receive two scholarships for the same designation (ex: two tuition or housing scholarships).

A student's total aid cannot exceed their cost of attendance (COA) assigned by the Office of Financial Aid. All scholarship adjustments are made by the Office of Financial Aid based on your total award package. Please contact their office for more information.

No. Students who miss the deadline are not eligible for immediate consideration. Students can complete a scholarship appeal to state their case, but scholarships are competitive and on a first come basis. Appeals are not guaranteed, as meeting the deadline is part of the initial eligibility criteria.

No. Students who withdrew from the university forfeit their existing scholarships and are not eligible for new admission-based awards. However, students can file a scholarship appeal for the semester they are returning to have any prior admission-based merit awards reinstated if they left in good academic standing based on their scholarship stipulation requirements and have remaining semesters of funding left. Admission status is determined by the Office of Admissions.

  • Yes, all students must follow the instructions located in the USM email address offer notification to properly accept their USM scholarship in the GO System and complete any necessary verification steps, such as the post acceptance questionnaire.
  • The only scholarships accepted in SOAR are Community College Transfer Academic, University College Transfer Academic, and Academic Excellence which are offered at the time of admission to the university and require not additional application steps. Instructions on how to accept these three awards can be found here.
  • Your scholarship tile located in the GO System will include a stipulation agreement outlining how you will maintain your scholarship(s). If no information is located on the tile, please refer to your original offer email for more information.
  • Certain admission-based, merit award stipulations can also be found in your Communication Center in SOAR attached to your original scholarship offer letter.
  • All scholarships administered by the Office of Undergraduate Scholarships require students to enroll in 15 credit hours each fall and spring semester and to maintain a minimum a 2.5 USM cumulative GPA, which can also be found under your To Do list in SOAR as a constant reminder for you and your advisor during the duration of your scholarship.
  • Auto-match awards do not require an additional application outside of the General Application. Offers are sent based on imported data collected through the GO System. Most scholarships will auto match with qualifying students based on the information from the General Application and Applicant Record.
  • Apply-to awards require a General Application and additional application questionnaire to allow for document submission or proof of membership, participation, or some other verifiable component.
  • Recommended Scholarships are a list of apply-to scholarships recommended for you based on your answers to the General Application. Those scholarship opportunities require additional information to determine final eligibility. You will only be considered for these “Recommended Opportunities” if you complete the additional questions.
Designation-based awards are "designated" only for students who have earned that specific distinction or membership status. Proof of status must be uploaded that clearly states the student's name and status identified in the award description in the GO System.
  • If you are offered a scholarship, you will be notified via email through your USM email address. You are responsible for logging into the Scholarship Application System to accept the scholarship and complete the post-acceptance.
  • After you accept the scholarship, complete the required post-acceptance process to thank the donor(s) of your scholarship. Afterwards, the scholarship will be credited to your student account in the academic semester for which it was awarded.
  • Some “Recommended Scholarships” require a Letter of Reference/Recommendation. You will provide a person’s name and email address so that an email can be sent to the reference provider asking them to upload a confidential letter of recommendation.
  • Before sending the reference link, you are encouraged to contact your reference and make a formal request (by email or in person), asking if he or she is willing to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf.
  • Admission-based awards automatically renew for the allotted amount of semesters listed in the initial offer as long as all stipulations are met each semester.

A FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is not required to receive all undergraduate scholarships, but some scholarships do have a financial need component that can only be determined through a completed FAFSA. The University of Southern Miss uses a different definition of financial need than federal aid and can use the FAFSA data to verify other eligibility requirements for particular USM Foundation scholarships. Remember, students should be admitted by December 1 as their priority deadline, and the Southern Miss FAFSA priority date for scholarship consideration December 15. This gives the student ample time to complete any FAFSA verification requirements before scholarships applications begin closing.

Transfer Scholarships: Academic and Designation-Based

These FAQs are pertaining to students receiving and applying-to transfer academic and transfer designation-based scholarships at T¶¶Ňőapp.

The Office of Undergraduate Scholarships sends monthly notification during the following times:

Students entering spring semesters: November, December and January
Students entering fall semesters: May - July

We consider all college work completed following high school, not just your most recently attended institution.  This will be your cumulative transfer GPA calculated by The University of Southern Mississippi Office of Admissions.

Academic records submitted and received by T¶¶Ňőapp Office of Admissions on or before the stated scholarship deadline will be considered for scholarship purposes. If your updated transcript is submitted after the deadline, these records will not be considered for scholarship eligibility.

Once a student attends another college/university after their high school graduation, they cannot receive freshman scholarships. They will be treated as a transfer student and will be reviewed for scholarship eligibility based on that model.

It is difficult to receive a scholarship after you have missed the deadline. Students have the right to appeal their scholarship status. We encourage students to provide official documentation of why he/she missed the scholarship deadline in efforts to illustrate his/her extenuating circumstance. Documentation of membership in student/academic organization is not sufficient proof of extenuating circumstance. Please visit our website, usm.edu/scholarships, for more information. All current USM students must complete one semester at USM before submitting an appeal.

No, transfer designation-based scholarships are available to students attending Southern Miss the fall or spring semester immediately following enrollment from their last institution. If your last attendance from another institution was over a year from the time enter Southern Miss, you are not eligible for transfer designation-based scholarships. You may, however, qualify for community transfer

Transfer Scholarships are only available for new students to USM. If you are returning to USM, you must submit an appeal with the University Scholarship Appeals Committee to receive your original transfer scholarship offer from your original admitted term. Extensions are not granted, so you may only receive any remaining semesters allotted if your scholarship appeal is approved. You will not be eligible for any new scholarship changes that have occurred since your withdrawal from the University. You will also not longer be eligible for any freshman scholarship offers, as you are not coded as a transfer student. Please visit our website, usm.edu/scholarships, for more information.

All documentation must be official and submitted by the stated deadline in the GO System.

  • Phi Theta Kappa:  certificate and/or proof of membership (PTK membership card or letter on letterhead from PTK advisor). Only documentation submitted via GO will be accepted and considered.
  • Phi Theta Kappa Officer:  Letter on letterhead from PTK advisor. Only documentation submitted via GO will be accepted and considered.
  • Phi Theta Kappa All-Academic First State/National Team Scholarship:  certificate of membership from advisor.  (This is an academic sponsored organization and not an athletic achievement.) Only documentation submitted via GO will be accepted and considered.
  • Transfer Eagle Scout/Gold Award Scholarship:  certificate and/or proof of membership (letter on letterhead from scout leader). Only documentation submitted via GO will be accepted and considered.

With your scholarship offer in the GO System, you will receive a stipulation agreement. This agreement will detail exactly what is needed to maintain your award. Stipulations include, but are not limited to, the number of hours each semester and cumulative grade point average at Southern Miss.

Navigating the GO System

The best place to begin will be the Office of Undergraduate Scholarships website.  You can view most of our new student scholarship opportunities at usm.edu/scholarships.  This will give you a good idea of which scholarships you might qualify for.

The “Recommended” scholarships are based on your answers from the General Application as well as the other student data we have on file for you; for example, your GPA, test scores, and educational background.  If you are not seeing a scholarship in the “Recommended” section, it could be an auto-match scholarship which will not show up because there are no additional components to complete. It is also possible that you do not currently meet all of the qualifications for said scholarship.

To review your student data on file, click on “My Applications” and then “Applicant Record”.

You can manage your references by clicking the “Reference” tab on your GO System account. Click the “view” button on the scholarship and confirm that the email address you entered for your reference is correct. If the email address is correct, navigate to the references tab and press the “Resend” button next to the reference provider name.

If the email address is incorrect, go back into your application, select “Add new reference” and enter the correct information.

If you are looking for a scholarship awarded by the Office of Scholarships & Financial Wellness or our Competitive Scholarship Programs you must be admitted by December 1 and have all required documentation in by the stated deadline.  Check out the Freshman Scholarship or Transfer Scholarship Deadline resource on the website.

If you are looking at USM Foundation scholarships, the priority date has passed.  The priority date for foundation scholarships is January 15. However, our general application is always available to complete in situations where additional scholarship opportunities become available.

If you have been awarded a scholarship in the GO System, you will receive an email to your USM email address that prompts you to go back into the GO System and accept your scholarship offer. The scholarship(s) you have been awarded will be located on the home page of your GO System account.  To view your home page, log into the GO System, click “My Applications” and view the status of any scholarships which you have been awarded and need to accept, or any applications you need to finish.  Pay attention to acceptance deadlines.

Have you accepted the scholarship in the GO System?

If not, the scholarship you have been awarded will be located on the home page of your GO System account. To view your home page, log into the GO system, click “My Applications.”  Click the gold “Accept” button to accept your scholarship.

If you have already accepted your scholarship it typically takes 48-72 hours for that be reflected on your SOAR account.  If it has been more than 72 hours since you have accepted your scholarship and you still do not see it posted on your account, please email the Office of Scholarships and Financial Wellness at scholars@usm.edu.

If you were awarded a scholarship through the Office of Undergraduate Scholarships, you received an award letter and stipulation regarding your scholarship.  This stipulation agreement outlines how many semesters you will receive the award.  You will not need to apply each year for these scholarships. For USM Foundation scholarships, you will need to fill out a new application each year.  Those scholarships are not multi-year awards, and you are not guaranteed to receive the same foundation scholarships you did last year.  We encourage students to complete a new General Application in October.  This is the same time you should be completing the new FAFSA (Financial Aid Application).
